Thanks to GPS we can now be a bit more accurate. But like any aid or technique, GPS cannot do all the work for us especially as its positions can be more accurate than charts themselves. Chart plotters superbly portray the vessels position for general navigation but when entering harbours they may be giving a false sense of security. GPS can be accurate to about metres depending on the receiver type and the conditions. Signal and accuracy can be affected by the antennae not seeing enough satellites or not receiving reliable information. A handheld GPS used inside the cabin may get shielded from many satellites and give a spurious or inaccurate fix. Small patch antennae on deck or on the aft rail, if shielded, will throw the position.

MATTs are an important part of the training activity carried out by every officer and soldier in the British Army, regardless of whether they are part of the Regular Army or Army Reserve. MATTs are divided into nine sections and cover a range of subjects considered important to the profession of soldiering, focussing on skills and attitudes that contribute to operational effectiveness. These subjects include shooting, fitness, first aid, navigation and operational law amongst others, and individuals have to achieve and maintain a standard appropriate to their role and their likeliness of operational deployment.

This article is divided into seven parts for easier reading. Part One provides a background to MATTs, discusses what they are, and when and where they are delivered, as well as a brief history.

Richard Steffy The glossary is primarily relevant to the first two sections of this handbook and is not meant to be representative of the entire field of maritime archaeology. As an independent contribution, it is an exquisite source of information on ship construction terminology, but also a testament to the work of the late Mr. Steffy, whose influence has been instrumental to the understanding of wooden ship building and the interpretation of shipwrecks and archival material. Words set in bold type are defined elsewhere in the glossary.

The invention relates to shipbuilding and for the design of contours of the hulls of displacement vessels, combining elements characteristic of the contours of single hull vessels and catamarans. At the same time, the advantages of single-hull vessels include the possibility of ensuring high stability in conditions of significant sea waves, the advantages of catamarans – less resistance to movement in water and the possibility of achieving higher speeds. The disadvantages of single-hull vessels include a relatively greater resistance at high speeds, to the disadvantages of catamarans – burrowing of the nasal extremities into a wave and less stability on a rough sea.

Specifically, in the invention according to the specified patent, which is further considered as a prototype, a hull form is proposed that includes close in length single hull bow and catamaran aft ends. The combination of these extremities into a single hull is ensured by a smooth combination of their outer sides, connecting the inner sides of the catamaran hulls floats of the aft end, separated by a tunnel, to the end bulkhead transom of the single-hull end and the deck above the tunnel between the catamaran floats.

The border of the contour transition between the bow and stern ends is located near the middle of the length of the hull of the vessel, while in the bottom part there is no smooth transition of contours – the rear part of the single-hull bow end is limited by a bulkhead, behind which the tunnel between the floats of the catamaran stern end begins.

This is of particular importance in the light of the increasing number of internationally trading vessels with crews speaking many different languages, since problems of communication may cause misunderstandings leading to dangers to the vessel, the people on board and the environment.

In , the Maritime Safety Committee agreed, at its twenty-seventh session that where language difficulties arise a common language should be used for navigational purposes, and that language should be English. In , the Maritime Safety Committee, at its sixtieth session, instructed the Sub-Committee on Safety of Navigation to develop a more comprehensive standardized safety language than SMNV , taking into account the changing conditions in modern seafaring and covering all major safety-related verbal communications.

The draft IMO SMCP, following international trials, was amended at the forty-sixth session of this Sub-Committee, and was given final consideration by the Maritime Safety Committee at its seventy-fourth session in the light of remarks received by the Organization. Under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, , as revised , the ability to use and understand the IMO SMCP is required for the certification of officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of gross tonnage or more.

A carriage supporting such athwartships track can be driven along a fore-and-aft boom and the block can be driven along the athwartships track so as to lay the seine back and forth in a pile below the block as it is hauled in. The athwartships track may include two quadrants having inboard ends parallel to each other and to the boom or may be straight.

If the athwartships track includes two quadrants, the boom carriage carries a transfer track section which can be placed in registry with the inboard end of either arcuate track section by shifting such arcuate track sections transversely of the boom. Rollers mounted for engagement by a seine being hauled by the power block can guide and deter billowing of the seine.

This application is a continuation-iu-part of my copending application Ser. It is a principal object of the present invention to effect power-driven movement of a power block into various locations above the deck of a purse seiner by remote control so that the seine can be stowed efiectively by piling it on the purse seiner deck with minimum hauling.

A point beyond the mid-point of a ship’s length, toward the stern relative to an object or point of reference ‘abaft the fore hatch’. Further aft than the beam: a relative bearing of greater than 90 degrees from the bow: ‘two points abaft the port beam’. Some modern references claim that AB stands for able-bodied seaman as well as, or instead of, able seaman.

Able seaman was originally entered using the abbreviation AB instead of the more obvious AS in ships’ muster books or articles. Such an entry was likely to avoid confusion with ordinary seaman OS.

Its mission is to conserve and develop marine and estuarine resources; to conduct and sponsor scientific research; to promote and develop the Maine coastal fishing industries; to advise and cooperate with local, state, and federal officials concerning activities in coastal waters; and to implement, administer, and enforce the laws and regulations for these enumerated purposes.

This web page provides information about the history of lobstering, the biology of the lobster, conservation practices, and laws and rules pertaining to the fishery in the State of Maine. The answer sheet to the test must be completed and returned along with an application and the required fees to the address listed above. This page is updated to the date above, but be aware that changes may occur prior to the page being updated. Historically, lobsters were so plentiful that Native Americans used them to fertilize their fields and to bait their hooks for fishing. Actual development of the fishery, of course, did not take place until many years later.

They were harvested by hand along the shoreline and served to prisoners and indentured servants who exchanged their passage to America for seven years of service to their sponsors. In Massachusetts, some of the servants finally rebelled.

The present invention relates to a marine speed nozzle which is positioned around the propeller of a ship and is hydrodynamically structured so that it maximizes the thrust provided by the propeller at lowers speeds, while also increasing the free running speed of the vessel. The most common propulsion mechanism used for cruise ships, tankers, freight carriers, steamships, cargo vessels, loading barges, tugboats, and other large marine vessels is the radiating blade propeller.

The propeller, which basically is a hub surrounded by a plurality of fan-like blades, is typically located under the rear or aft end of a ship and its rotation accelerates water towards the rear of the ship to effectuate the primary means of driving and maneuvering the vessel. Those skilled in the art relating to marine propulsion devices have realized that the propulsion efficiency of a ship’s propeller may be increased by carefully channelling the incoming water flow to a ships propeller and similarly directing the accelerated water flow efficiently as it leaves the back of the propeller.

In the past, various types of conical enclosures or nozzles have been fashioned in an attempt to increase the performance of the ships propeller. Essentially, a conical enclosure or nozzle surrounds the propeller in a longitudinal direction and directs an optimal amount of water flow into the propeller. The principles of fluid dynamics dictate that the volume of water flowing into the propeller will equal the volume of water flowing out.

As such, the diameter of the nozzle is reduced as the water flows rearward and out of the nozzle. Since the volume of water exiting must equal the volume that enters the nozzle, the water flow accelerates as it travels through the nozzle and thereby provides additional thrust to the ship which cannot be achieved by the propeller alone. The additional thrust is demanded by cargo ships, tugboats, freightliners, aircraft carriers, and similar marine vessels which must carry substantial loads or tow heavy cargo while operating at low speeds.

Although the scientific principles underlying the use of a conical enclosure or nozzle to increase a propeller’s efficiency are clear, these principles have not yet yielded a practical and functional nozzle design that does not sacrifice performance in normal operating situations to maximize performance at low speed situations.
